A Jonah's boat (1977), Marc Chagall |
1. What was he thinking when he, a prophet, fled from God who commanded him to go to Nineveh? Did he really think he could hide himself?
2. Why does such a person get chosen as a prophet in the first place?
3. Am I also fleeing in any form?
4. How did the people in Nineveh lose their desire for God while keeping all the appearance of religion all over the city?
5. Why does Jonah get angry at mercy and graciousness? Do I also grumble at kindness, while hanging onto a narrow kind of justice?
6. Probably Jonah got frustrated because of the seeming lack of function of his going to the Nineveh? He might have thought that God really wanted to, he could just save the people without Jonah himself. Why the hassle, he might have thought. What does this imply about God and how he works?
7. How important is the appearance of fish in the book of Jonah? Or is it rather tangential?
8. What had to happen to Jonah so that he would finally pray to God?
9. How do I reconcile God's sovereignty with my free will?
